The United Nations has called for accountability regarding the violence, loss of life, and violations of human and political rights during the mass uprising in Bangladesh that led to the ouster of former autocratic Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5.
Responding to a question from UN correspondent Mushfiqul Fazal Ansarey about the loss of 819 lives and injuries to 25,000 people allegedly caused under Sheikh Hasina’s regime during the protests, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric emphasized the need for justice.
During a briefing at UN headquarters on Tuesday, Dujarric stated, “Mushfique, we’ve been speaking about accountability since the beginning of this crisis. There must be accountability for the violence, loss of life, and all violations of human and political rights.”
Earlier in the briefing, Dujarric addressed inquiries about a letter sent by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. He confirmed that Guterres had written a congratulatory letter to Muhammad Yunus, the newly appointed Chief Adviser of the interim Government of Bangladesh.
In the letter, the Secretary-General welcomed efforts to restore calm and organize parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. He expressed hope that Dr. Yunus’ government would adopt an inclusive approach, taking into account the voices of young people, women, as well as minority and indigenous communities.
Guterres further urged the interim government to ensure the protection of all citizens, particularly minorities, and to prioritize the well-being of Rohingya refugees in light of the worsening situation in Myanmar.
