The United Nations has welcomed the newly formed interim government in Bangladesh, led by Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, describing the process as “inclusive.”

During a noon briefing on Friday, Florencia Soto Niño, Associate Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, emphasized the UN’s support for the inclusive nature of the government’s formation and expressed hope that this approach would continue.

“What we welcome is the fact that there seems to be an inclusive process for forming a government, and we hope that continues,” Niño said in response to a question from UN correspondent Mushfiqul Fazal Ansarey. Ansarey had inquired about the UN Secretary-General’s view on the recent oath-taking ceremony of the interim government, which was established following the departure of former dictator Hasina amidst a mass uprising led by students and the public.

Niño further noted, “We also welcome any signs that there is a lessening of violence and more restraint in the country. But I don’t have anything further to add.”

The statement reflects the UN’s cautious optimism about the transition of power in Bangladesh and its emphasis on maintaining peace and inclusivity during this critical period.
