Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman today questioned the role of the administration and law enforcement agencies following an alleged attack, vandalism, and looting at a health centre in Mirpur-1, Dhaka.
He also called for an end to what he described as “political games” in recruiting government primary school teachers, saying merit and qualifications should be the only criteria for public-sector jobs.
Shafiqur raised the issues in two separate posts on his verified Facebook page today.
In one post, the Jamaat chief claimed that more than 200 masked people armed with local weapons looted and vandalised the Radha MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-1 late at night.
He said a “mysterious” signboard was later put up at the site.
“Where is the administration, where are the law enforcement agencies?” he asked.
Shafiqur alleged that it was now clear who was behind the incident, saying the attack had deprived local people of access to healthcare.
He questioned how such an incident could take place when the government had pledged to take healthcare services to people’s doorsteps.
“How long will this game continue?” he asked, demanding that those responsible be identified and brought to justice.
In another post this afternoon, Shafiqur urged the government to “move away from the wrong politics” in recruiting primary school teachers and respect merit.
“Entry into government jobs is not a matter of political allegiance. As citizens, job seekers’ merit and qualifications should be the only considerations,” he said.
He also called for an end to what he described as the continuation of practices used by the previous “fascist” government in the name of verification.
He warned that the public would not tolerate any such activities and called on young people, including meritorious youths, to remain vocal in demanding their rights.
“There is no scope for giving concessions. Otherwise, Bangladesh will turn into a haven for meritless fascism,” the Jamaat chief added.
