The High Court (HC) today delivered its judgment, discharging a rule issued in response to a writ petition seeking national identity cards without photographs but with biometric features instead.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Md Iqbal Kabir and Justice S M Saiful Islam pronounced the judgment, after holding hearing on the ruling.

Advocates Sk Omar Sharif and Md Elyas Ali Mondal appeared for the writ petitioner, while advocate Kamal Hossain Miaji represented the Election Commission.

“Following today’s judgment, national identity cards cannot be issued without photographs,” said advocate Kamal Hossain Miaji.

Sumaiya Ahmad Muna, a resident of Shantibagh in the capital, filed the writ petition on February 10, 2022, seeking a national identity card without a photograph but with biometric features.

Following a hearing on the petition, the High Court had issued the rule. The HC today discharged the rule and disposed of the writ petition.
