Bangladesh Nationalist Party lawmaker for a reserved women’s seat Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti has resigned from parliament as the party moves to take action over the attack and demolition of the RADDA MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur.
Mishti went to the Speaker’s office at around 2:00pm on Thursday and submitted her resignation, said a parliamentary official.
While leaving the parliament complex, Mishti was approached by journalists but she did not make any comment.
Earlier, a source at the Prime Minister’s Office said that Mishti, whose name has surfaced in allegations surrounding the attack, had been asked to resign from her parliamentary seat either on Thursday or Sunday.
Mishti is the younger sister of late Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu, a former BNP lawmaker and former president of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
Her late husband, Sayeedur Rahman Newton, was a former Dhaka City Corporation ward councillor and BNP leader who was killed in 2002.
The development came a week after an overnight attack on the nearly 50-year-old RADDA MCH-FP Centre at Plot-9, Main Road, Section-1, Mirpur, on September 25.
Nasrin Akhter, executive director of the RADDA MCH-FP Centre, later filed a case against one named individual and 200–250 unidentified people.
Nasrin later said that the attackers demolished the centre and, after occupying the property, put up a signboard reading ‘Somomona Dokandar Samity Ltd’ in front of the premises.
The attackers allegedly held two security guards hostage before entering the centre, vandalising the premises and looting equipment and valuables.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Wednesday that an investigation was under way against a local member of parliament over the demolition of the facility in Mirpur.
