Jamaat-e-Islami ameer and opposition leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Saturday said the six-point demands of the 11-party alliance were not those of any particular political party but of the people.
He said the movement would continue until the people’s verdict in the referendum was implemented.
Shafiqur made the remarks while addressing the concluding rally of the 11-party alliance’s long march at Laldighi Maidan in Chattogram on Saturday night.
‘You have insulted 70 per cent of the people of Bangladesh by denying the people’s verdict in the referendum. You have betrayed the promises made to them,’ he said.
He said the opposition would not betray the people or be influenced by any inducement.
‘We have been offered many inducements and temptations. We clearly say that we will not even look at any of them,’ he said.
‘The verdict given by 70 per cent of the people must be implemented. InshaAllah, we will get it implemented. We will not take a break before that. We will not stop. Our struggle will continue and Bangladesh will change,’ he said.
Referring to the Chattogram mayor, Shafiqur said the mayor’s tenure had expired and questioned the appointment of administrators to run the city.
‘What do you call this? This is fascism. Come and contest an election and get elected. BNP had promised that elected representatives would run the country. Are those who have been appointed as administrators elected representatives?’ he asked.
At the rally, Shafiqur asked the crowd whether they wanted justice for all the killings, including those of people who were martyred in 2024, and for those who had created Aynaghar.
‘We promise that we will ensure justice for those killings,’ he said.
Earlier in the day, the long march began with an inaugural rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel, Dhaka, at 7:00am. The procession later held roadside rallies at several points along the Dhaka-Chattogram highway.
