The police on early Tuesday arrested two activists of Juba League, youth wing of Awami League, in connection with a case filed over Monday’s crude bomb blast at the National Citizen Party’s July March rally in Savar on the outskirts of the capital.
The arrested are Nurul Islam, 52, former general secretary of Joymontop Union unit Juba League, and Md Sajeeb, 32, a Juba League activist. Both are the residents of Anandapur area in Savar.
The police conducted a raid in Anandapur area and arrested the suspects at about 4:00am, said Savar model police station sub-inspector Shakhawat Imtiaz, also the investigating officer of the case.
‘We have sent the suspects to the court with a seven-day remand application,’ said Shakhawat.
Earlier, Md Salamat Ullah Rony, member secretary of the Dhaka North unit of NCP, filed the case against unidentified individuals under the Explosive Substances Act, 1908 with Savar model police station on early Tuesday. City& Local Guides
The plaintiff of the case suspected that a banned outfit was involved in the incident, according to the case document.
The unidentified individuals carried out the blast with the intention of killing the NCP leaders and the general audience through the explosion in a pre-planned manner, it alleged.
The explosion occurred at about 9:402pm, about 10 to 15 feet in front of the stage, while the NCP leaders delivering their speeches, it said, claiming that at least five people, including the party activists and journalists, were injured in the blast.
It also claimed that electricity of the venue was cut off five to 10 minutes before the central leaders went to the stage, leaving the venue dark.
The police station’s acting officer-in-charge Nur Mohammad said that investigation and operation regarding the blast were underway to identify and arrest the involved persons.
The explosion occurred at the Tarapur Eidgah ground while the programme was under way and senior party leaders, including NCP convener Md Nahid Islam, member secretary Akhter Hossen and chief organiser (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam, were on the stage.
The police also formed a three-member probe committee to investigate the incident.
