MP Gazi Nazrul Islam’s second wife found dead at NAM Bhaban

Police recovered the body of 19-year-old Mariam Khatun, the second wife of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, from a flat at NAM Bhaban in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar this evening.

Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, said police found Mariam’s body hanging inside the flat.

“The MP was in the flat,” he said, adding that police were trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Mohammad Ibne Mizan, deputy commissioner of Tejgaon division, said police went to the scene after receiving information about the incident.

Police meanwhile took Gazi Nazrul and his first wife to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station for questioning.

“After the interrogation, a decision will be taken regarding them,” said DC Mizan.

He added that a Crime Scene Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department had also reached to collect evidence.

On July 22, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami expelled Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam from the party after an internal investigation found evidence of “moral misconduct”.

The party took the decision after video clips involving Gazi Nazrul and a young woman circulated on social media. Gazi Nazrul and members of his family said the woman was his second wife.
