Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Saturday said the law enforcement agencies are fully prepared to ensure security during the upcoming election, once a date is set by the chief adviser.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after visiting the RAB-1 office.
“The chief adviser will decide when the election will be held. We are prepared for that time,” he said.
When asked what sort of preparations had been made, the adviser responded: “We have taken the necessary measures based on the timing and nature of the election. The preparations are in line with those requirements.”
In response to a question about police failing to provide protection to Nurul Haque Nur, president of Gono Odhikar Parishad, during his program in Patuakhali, and how protection could be ensured during the next eight months leading up to the election, the adviser said: “Such minor incidents always occur.”
He added: “If you look at the past 53 years, these things have happened. That’s exactly why our law enforcement agencies exist. If nothing ever happened, there would be no need for a police force.”
Asked about a mugging incident in Uttara earlier in the day involving individuals wearing RAB uniforms, the adviser said: “I wasn't aware of the incident until just now. If the person wearing the uniform was indeed a RAB member, he will not be spared either.”
He added: “Many are committing crimes while dressed as RAB, police, or Ansar. We will bring them all under the law.”
Responding to a query about the rise in murder cases—over 350 nationwide in the last four months, according to police statistics—the adviser said: “Even you are saying there has been an improvement in law and order. We are working to reduce these incidents as much as possible.”
